Kgetleng-Rivier Mayor appreciates Thank a Trucker campaign.

Truck drivers along the N4, drove to their surprise in Swatruggens when they were stopped by a joint law enforcement and road safety officers who greeted them with words of appreciation. It is a "Thank a Trucker" campaign that has changed the law enforcement approach to the truck drivers who are normally being stopped and checked for compliance.

The campaign is set to appreciate the role of drivers in keeping the economy going despite the challenges they are faced with on daily basis. In his remarks during the campaign, the Kgetleng-Rivier Local Municipality Mayor Cllr Thabo Jacobs said the drivers are never being appreciated and this campaign is the first of it's nature.

"Truck drivers are our brothers and sisters and they have never being recognized in this manner and they contribute a lot in the economy of the country. We thank TKC for bringing the campaign in our town. We have always known that we are part of the corridor and it is great to see this operation taking place in our town," said Mayor Jacobs, who advocated for further discussions to improve the corridor with interest within the jurisdictions of his municipality.

He said there must be platforms where there could be discussions on possible economic opportunities for the people of Kgetleng-Rivier. "We must find a workable solution to offer our truck drivers a proper accommodation than having to sleep in their trucks," said Jacobs.

The Mayor who was accompanied by the MMC for Community Services Cllr Mokone engaged with truck drivers, and handed over cooperate gifts and food to them. Amongst the drivers, was Themba Maphosa from Botswana, a cross border transportation driver for more than 26 years, who appreciated the campaign which focused specifically on truck drivers.

The Director for Regional Corridor from the National Department of Transport, who is also a TKCMC chair, Mr Segodi Mogotsi said most of truck drivers faced a lot of challenges during the COVID-19 while ensuring that they transport much needed goods.

"We fail to appreciate their service of ensuring that we receive our goods on time. The food that we eat on daily basis is transported by these truckers and they face a lot of challenges just to ensure that we receive our trade.

"It is through this campaign that we want to appreciate them and advocate for road safety on our corridor," said Mogotsi.

The Trans Kalahari Corridor is a tripartite, trans-boundary Corridor Management Institution that was established with a political and economic vision to pursue or contribute towards deeper regional integration programs of SADC, SACU AND NEPAD.
